I'm always in the midst of learning something new, or trying to get better at what I do.
People are born with a great capacity for pattern recognition. I enjoy applying that talent.
Helping someone accomplish their goals provides me with a sense of fulfillment.
Grew up in Michigan. Automotive manufacturing was the main industry. I learned how to do bodywork and minor automotive repairs or installs. My extended family did a lot of construction. These things taught me how to be proficient with hand tools, power tools, and be mechanically minded.
Most of my jobs early on were in the service industry. From scrubbing pans to cooking entrees. I quickly was put in leadership positions and learned about employee management and customer service. Through these experiences I gained skills that have helped me relate to others, diffuse tense situations, and be willing to get my hands dirty if the situation calls for it.
I've been that guy who shows up to unlock your car or jump your battery. I've swung a sledge hammer installing tents. I've done landscaping, commercial painting, I've signed people up for mortgages, drove a broom truck down the sides of the most remote state roads in Utah at 3 mph, I even sold loose diamonds to jewelry stores for a short time. Each one of these positions taught me things that I still use today.
Then I decided to go to college.
First generation, low income. Had to figure it out. Fortunately, I was not afraid to ask questions. Took advantage of almost every source of guidance available, and met some of the best people in the process. These people would inspire me to return the favor and these experiences ignited my passion for helping others.
Majored in Applied Environmental Geoscience because of the awe I have experienced from nature, the opportunity to be involved with understanding the planet we live on, and also I liked breaking rocks open with my Dads hammer when I was a kid.
During my time in college I was elected the President of SGE, and the Geo Club. I was appointed a Supreme Court Justice for the student body and learned what an ombudsman is. I was a part of the Honors Advisory board, and participated in multiple volunteer events around the community, on campus, and in other states.
I was a tutor for Upward Bound, which is an after school college prep program for pre-college students. I was also a tutor and counselor for non-traditional students, and I was also a tutor for the geoscience department.
While in college I participated in multiple research projects, presented research at both regional and national conferences, and applied the skills I was learning to jobs around campus.
I graduated with honors, first in my family to get a degree.
Due to some family health issues, I moved back to Michigan to be close by and help out.
My first job out of college was shipping and collecting hazardous waste for a local transfer station.
After that I worked for a consulting firm that tested ground water.
Then I got a job at an engineering firm.
Most recently I worked for a company that did storm hardening for power distribution systems. They lost their contract and I was again looking for the next thing.
